Moose safari

The tour starts from Romsås Framigard on the Stor-Tann Seter (850 meters above sea)
From there the route goes approx. 1 km along the Saubuveien to a moor land where the “king of forest” normally grazes.

The moose is very wary and hides in the forest in the daytime. At dusk the moose often comes out and grazes on the moor lands. This is exactly where and when we will try to walk softly and see the moose, and experience the excitement as we try to get as close as possible.

Afterwards, hopefully after we saw moose, we warm ourselves in the “lavo”-tent, with warm beverages or hacked moose-meat with bread and thin wafer crisp bread.

Duration:
approx. 3-4 hours
Max. 12 persons per tour.
The moose safari can be changed due to special desires. Please take contact with Ringebu Natur.

Details on the moose safari
We drive through the village Brekkom to the seter-village Store-Tann, where 27 farms have a seter. From here we go an old mountain path into the realm of the “king of forest”. On the route we see that the moose eats fresh twigs of birch, juniper and pine or heather in the winter. An adult moose must have approx. 40- 70 kg of such fodder each day. In the winter the moose consumes its fat reserves from the summer. The males lose their horns each winter. The horns grow out again in the summer, and become larger from year to year. The size of the horns determines rank among the males.
The female moose bear their calves at the end of May – June, and follow the calves until she bears new calves the following year. Then they are driven away by the mother, of course if they are not already shot in their first autumn. At birth they already weigh approx. 12-15 kg, and already in the autumn they weight approx. 120-150 kg. A fully grown adult male can weigh up to 600 kg. The moose is the largest deer animal in Norway and is now common throughout most of the country.

The moose hunt starts on 25th of October, and lasts up to the 1st of November. Ca 40 000 moose are shot per year in Norway. The same number in Ringebu is approx. 270 and in Brekkom approx. 35-40 animals. This means large quantities of delicious meat to the landowners.
The moose has bad eyesight, but hear and smell better. It is very wary of humans, who are their largest enemies. Therefore it is difficult to come close to a moose. If you are looking for a possibility to see a moose, it is important to move silently and not to have the wind from behind.
Therefore we can never guarantee that we see moose, but the possibility is large. During the day the moose hides in the forest. The safari takes place at dusk, when the moose comes to graze in the open areas.
Put on warm shoes, gloves and cap, and warm clothes, that does not make noise while we walk.
After we hopefully have seen moose, we serve warm beverages. We serve home-made hacked moose-meat with bread and thin wafer crisp bread. This must be ordered.
